An American Dream

The History of Pullman Palace Car Company

An American Dream

In 1867, George Pullman founded the Pullman Palace Car Company, which would soon become synonymous with luxury travel.

From Carriages to Trains

Before Pullman, train travel was an uncomfortable and often dangerous experience. Pullman's luxurious sleeping cars, however, offered passengers a comfortable and safe way to travel.

Expanding Empire

In 1869, Pullman bought the Detroit Car and Manufacturing Company, consolidating his manufacturing operations. He also expanded his product line to include other types of railcars, including coaches, streetcars, troop transports, and private cars.

Pullman's company played a major role in the development of the American railroad system. His luxurious railcars helped to make train travel more comfortable and convenient, and his company's innovations helped to shape the future of the railroad industry.
