Alonso's Solo Shot In 8th Gives Mets Comeback Win

McCann's RBI Single In The 9th Gives Mets 3 Straight Wins

The New York Mets (83-69) defeated the Washington Nationals (55-97) by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night at Citi Field. The Mets won their third straight game and moved within 2.5 games of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

Pete Alonso hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. It was Alonso's 38th home run of the season.

The Nationals tied the game in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by Ildemaro Vargas. But the Mets answered right back in the bottom of the ninth when James McCann hit an RBI single to score Brandon Nimmo.

Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 32nd save of the season. Taijuan Walker started for the Mets and allowed one run on four hits in six innings. He struck out eight batters and walked two.

Patrick Corbin started for the Nationals and allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. He struck out five batters and walked two.

The Mets will face the Nationals again on Wednesday night at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.
