4 Under-the-Radar Freshmen from BYU's 'Home-Run' Class

Sure, BYU’s class of 2026 has highly touted players like Jaxson Dart, Jayden Limar, and Tetairoa McMillian, but there’s a handful of lesser-known players who could be impact players.

Kalani Sitake has been busy recruiting talented players to Provo and his 2023 recruiting class looks to be one of his best yet.

Here are four under-the-radar freshmen who have a chance to make an impact for the Cougars in 2023:

  • Sol-Jay Maiava, DB - Maiava is a 3-star recruit from St. Louis, Hawaii. He is a physical safety with a great frame (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) and athleticism. Maiava could be a key contributor on special teams and could even start at safety.
  • Ethan Slade, DL - Slade is a 3-star recruit from Pleasant Grove, Utah. He is a versatile defensive lineman who can play multiple positions. Slade is strong and physical, and he has a good motor. He could be a key contributor on the defensive line in 2023.
  • Mikey Matthews, WR - Matthews is a 3-star recruit from Gilbert, Arizona. He is a big, physical receiver with great hands. Matthews is a good route runner and he has a strong work ethic. He could be a key contributor at wide receiver in 2023.
  • Brock Fautanu, TE - Fautanu is a 3-star recruit from Kahuku, Hawaii. He is a big, physical tight end with good athleticism. Fautanu needs to add strength but has soft hands and can be a key target in the passing game.
